The challenges we face are not a barrier

A time of change brings us challenges.

Sometimes, frustrated, we wish those problems would go away. But in our work, the challenges we face are not a barrier to our job, they are our job. Resolving them is what we are paid to do.

And in our personal lives, the challenges we face are not our a barrier to our growth, they are our opportunity for personal growth: the situations we would like to learn to deal with.

So the first step to addressing these challenges is to see each ‘problem’ as an opportunity. The bigger the challenge, the bigger the opportunity to make the changes we seek.

Sometimes we discover that we’d rather go and work on something else, something we care about more, and that’s OK too. As Steve Jobs showed, the second step is use this situation as an opportunity to find what you love.

And when you know the issues you care about, which ones are priorities for you, there are five types of actions you might want to take, and five different options for how much you might want to learn from the situation.

Then, when you’ve decided which way forward is right for you, you’ll do better if you know how to inspire yourself and others to make it happen.

Every challenge we face is an opportunity to learn and grow: either to become better at building something we care about, or at learning that we don’t care about it — it’s not our problem — and then finding something that matters more to us instead.

We are not just human beings we are human becomings. And we don’t grow when things are easy: we grow when we face and overcome challenges.
